Staff Incentives Working Group

In collaboration with MicroSave-Africa and CGAP, MFN has been studying how to develop effective staff incentive schemes. Through these efforts, the MFN carried out a worldwide survey to analyse the existing staff incentive schemes of microfinance institutions in terms of their overall design features (especially if they have incorporated social performance indicators), their comprehensiveness, and their effectiveness in achieving the intended results.

Microinsurance Working Group

In collaboration with the Microinsurance Centre and the International Fund for Agricultural Development, MFN has started to work on development of technical tools and manuals related to microinsurance. By the year 2009, the Working Group aims to have finalised the tools and manuals, ready to contribute to the promotion of microinsurance products among the microfinance institutions around the world.  In addition, the Working Group members meet monthly to learn and discuss a variety of topics related to microinsurance product design and management.

Social Indicators Working Group

This Working Group, in collaboration with CGAP, aims to test three social indicators related to the Millennium Development Goals (poverty outreach, children's schooling, and economic impact). While an industry-wide Social Performance Task Force is working on defining core set of social indicators, MFN hopes that this Working Group will be able to contribute much to its efforts.

Transformation Working Group

A group of MFN members, who are going through or planning to go through the transformation process, has joined this Working Group to study the content of the recent joint World Bank/MFN publication, "Transforming Microfinance Institutions: Providing Full Financial Services to the Poor". The Working Group members will discuss their challenges with the authors of the book. Also, as a subset of this Working Group, Alex Silva, Executive Director of Calmeadow, leads a study to answer the following questions: With MFIs that are NGOs or are owned by NGOs, why don't transformation process and/or mergers and acquisitions (M&A) take place as often as one may expect? What kind of perverse incentives might exist, and how the interests of all the involved parties (directors, staff, etc.) can be aligned so as to correct/eliminate such perverse incentives?

Pro-Consumer Policies Working Group

This group aimed to raise the level of awareness of consumer protection and to increase the transparency among Network members on consumer protection issues. With the support of the SEEP Network Consumer Protection Working Group and ACCION International, MFN members adopted a pro-consumer pledge in 2004.
